Since 1999 Jim Smith has been a professor at American Public University where he has taught natural disaster management and environmental studies. Since 2006 he has studied the relationships between airports and emergency management agencies, resulting in a series of papers. (See list to right on this page.) U.S. airports participating in these prior studies were CLT, DFW, MEM, MSY, and SFO. Twelve overseas airports were also included. Jim is a member and serves on committess for AAAE, ASCE, and IAEM.

Jim is a Professional Engineer and has his doctorate in environmental design and planning from Virginia Tech.
